Kerbside collection of PMD waste from 2025
Starting January 2025, the municipality of Maastricht will start collecting PMD waste (plastic, metal, and drink cartons) door-to-door every 2 weeks in most parts of the city. Once residents have adapted to the new system, we will remove the underground PMD containers from the sorting stations in these neighbourhoods. These will be replaced with underground nappy containers and/or paper and glass containers.
Residents' wishes
Last year, the municipality gathered residents' opinions on the new waste collection system through information evenings and surveys. This system, which will be finalised by the end of 2024, will be implemented in stages. The municipal council has also requested immediate measures. By collecting PMD waste door-to-door, the municipality aims to meet residents' wishes for more door-to-door services.
Objectives
Experience in other municipalities and the trial in Itteren and Borgharen, where we already collect PMD waste door-to-door, shows that residual waste is decreasing. This means less waste is incinerated, which is better for the environment. Additionally, the collected PMD waste is less poluted, making it easier to recycle. Kerbside collection also helps keep the milieuperrons (sorting stations) tidier.
Exception: Maastricht Centre
In the centre of Maastricht (the area surrounded by the singel streets, Noorderbrug, Kennedybrug and Groene Loper), PMD waste cannot be collected at home for now. Here, we will continue to use the 12 sorting stations for PMD waste collection.
The centre has many subdivided houses and limited storage space for residents. Additionally, the presence of numerous shops and hospitality venues makes kerbside collection impractical.
PMD bags
We will collect PMD waste in transparent bags. These bags are expected to be available for free at various collection points from November. We will inform you in good time about where and when you can get the bags.
