New steps in waste management from 2025

Change is in the bag for Maastricht.

There will be major changes to waste services in the coming years. These changes aim to make waste disposal easier, helping us make Maastricht cleaner and greener. Ultimately, Maastricht aims to eliminate waste altogether and turn it into resources for new products.

What’s changing in 2025?

Pmd Collection—not in the city centre

From 1 January 2025, we will start collecting pmd—plastic packaging, metal packaging and drink cartons—in many areas of the city. The underground pmd containers at the milieuperrons (sorting stations) will be removed. This change will be introduced gradually across different areas and the city centre will be an exception. Pmd collection will not yet start in the city centre and the underground pmd containers at the sorting stations in this area will stay. The city centre is the area bounded by the Groene Loper, Noorderbrug and Kennedybrug routes and Hertogsingel.

Recycling centres

The milieuparken (recycling centres) will be free to use from 1 January 2025, with charges applying only to:

  • Bulky waste
  • Residual waste not disposed of in official red-and-white residual waste bags. Residual waste in red-and-white residual waste bags can still be dropped off for free.

The weighbridge at the Rondeel recycling centre will be removed. From 1 January, waste here will be estimated and charged by cubic metre (m3), as at the other recycling centres.

Gft+e collection days

Collection days for gft+e—vegetable, fruit, garden and food waste—will change in some neighbourhoods. Check the MilieuApp or waste calendar for your street’s collection days.

Bulky waste collection from your home

We can collect bulky waste items from your home. You can get 1 free bulky waste collection per year; you will only be charged a processing fee.

Residual waste

Nothing will change from 1 January 2025—you can still put out your red-and-white residual waste bags as usual. However, changes will be introduced gradually over the coming years. In many areas, the residual waste bags will be replaced by underground containers for residual waste. This may vary by district or neighbourhood. You will receive all the information you need if and when your area is affected.

MilieuApp

Please download the MilieuApp to keep up to date with the changes. You can also visit our page about waste management. All households will receive a printed waste calendar in December, and 2025 collection days will be visible in the MilieuApp from mid-December.

Having trouble downloading the MilieuApp? Visit the Digicafé at Centre Céramique every Wednesday from 10.00 to 12.00 midday.

Together, we can make our city cleaner and greener.
