Renewing or adding driving licence category online

  • Are you registered in the Basisregistratie Personen (Personal Records Database, BRP) of the municipality of Maastricht?
  • Do you have a smartphone with NFC chip (Android 4.4 or higher / iPhone 7 or higher with IOS13)?
  • Do you have the DigiD app on your smartphone and have you already completed a one-time check of your identity document with it?

Do you not meet all the above conditions? Or has your driving licence been lost or stolen? Then you can apply for your driving licence (by appointment) at the municipal service desk.

How does the online process work?

If you meet the above conditions, you can renew or add an extra category to your driving licence through the RDW website. Follow the step-by-step plan below.

  1. Have your passport-sized photo taken by an RDW-approved photographer

First, have a digital passport-sized photo taken at an RDW-approved photographer and take your driving licence with you. On the RDW website, you can search for an accredited photographer (only available in Dutch) using your postcode or place of residence.

At the photographer, put your signature. This will later be used on your new driving licence.

The photographer sends your photo and signature securely to the RDW. Within a few minutes, you will receive an e-mail from the RDW confirming that you can apply online.

Please note: The cost of taking the photos is not included. You pay these costs separately to the photographer.

  2. Your online application

Click on the link in the e-mail and log in with the DigiD app. This allows you to arrange your online extension or extension within a few minutes. You then pay with the iDeal online payment method.

  3. Collecting your driving licence

After 2 working days you can collect your new driving licence at the municipal service desk. Bring your current driving licence with you. You must hand it in at the municipal service desk.
