The Municipality of Maastricht processes a large amount of personal data. We need this data to carry out our legal obligations, to handle your requests and questions, and to maintain public order. We only process your personal data if this is necessary. We handle this data carefully and do so in accordance with the laws and regulations
What are ‘personal data’?
Personal data is all information about a person, for instance their name or address. Data that indirectly says something about someone is also personal data. Further information about personal data can be found on the website of the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
What is police data?
Police data are personal data used by special investigating officers (boas) in the performance of their police duties. It mainly refers to data recorded by the boas when issuing an official report.
General Data Protection Regulation (AVG)
Due to developments in privacy law and technology, the Personal Data Protection Act was due for replacement. It was decided to create a European Privacy Regulation: the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG). This legislation applies to all EU countries. The law will apply from 25 May 2018. You can find more information about the AVG on the website of the Personal Data Authority
Police Data Act
The protection of police data is regulated by a dedicated law: in the Police Data Act. The police use police data and the Maastricht municipality also processes police data. In our case, this concerns the personal data used by the special investigating officers (boa's) in the performance of their police duties. For example, when they fine someone for an offence such as urinating in public or school absenteeism.

Safer on the Internet
Like businesses, you can now access the Internet as a private user through a VPN server. This technology allows you as a user to use public Wi-Fi networks more securely. And with this, Internet providers cannot find out what websites you are visiting. This is because the connection between you as a user and the server is encrypted. You can use VPN technology through commercial services that offer this service for individuals.
