Leaf mould cages

Fallen leaves can cause issues on the streets during autumn. When the leaves start to fall, we place leaf mould cages for you to collect them. These cages are emptied regularly. Only leaves should be placed in the cages—branches, trimmings, or other garden waste should go in your green waste bin. If a leaf mould cage is used for other waste, it will be removed.

Placement of leaf mould cages

We place the leaf mould cages in autumn and keep them there while trees are shedding their leaves. We assess each neighbourhood to see if cages can be moved during the season, as not all trees lose their leaves at the same time. The cages are first placed near trees that shed early, and later moved to areas with trees that drop their leaves later in the season.

Need a cage moved?

If the cage in your area is not easily accessible or you want one on your street, you can request a move by email. We will assess the request and see what’s possible.

It’s not guaranteed that a cage can be placed at the requested location. We aim to distribute them evenly across the city, taking into account nearby tree species and location accessibility. You can find more details in the dropdown menu at the bottom of this page.

Leaves only

You may only dispose of leaves in the leaf mould cages. Branches, trimmings, or other garden waste should go in or next to your green waste bin. You can leave two bundles (up to 150 cm long, 50 cm wide, and 25 kg) next to your bin or container each week.

If leaves aren’t causing any issues, like on grass, leave them. They provide shelter for wildlife and support biodiversity.

    • The cage must be placed on grass, in an accessible location for both residents and our collection service.
    • Cages are intended for leaves from city-owned trees, not private ones.
    • We aim for an even distribution of cages across the city.
    • If a cage is underused, it will be moved to a different location.
    • We monitor when trees lose their leaves. Some shed early in the season, while others drop their leaves later. We place and move the cages accordingly.

  • In areas where we control weeds, we also collect leaves from the streets. We try to respond to other leaf-related requests, but this isn’t always possible.
