Waste sorting
Last year, over 11 million kilogrammes of vegetable, fruit, garden and food waste (groente-, fruit-, tuinafval en etensresten, gft+e) were collected in Maastricht. That's about the weight of 7,028 adult rhinoceroses. The compost produced from this can be used to enrich soil in all types of gardens and allotments.
How your gft+e is composted
Your vegetable, fruit, garden and food waste (groente-, fruit-, tuinafval en etensresten, gft+e) is collected at the kerbside and goes to a composting site. Contaminants such as glass and packaging materials are sorted out before it is turned into compost. After a few weeks, the compost is ready to be used in gardens, agriculture and horticulture.
Free compost on National Compost Day
On National Compost Day (Landelijke Compostdag), you can pick up free compost at various locations in Maastricht. The free compost is our way of thanking you for separating your gft+e.
National Compost Day 2024: Saturday 23 March
In 2024, National Compost Day is on Saturday 23 March. Free compost will be available between 9.00 and 17.00 at 25 locations in Maastricht. Below is a list showing where you can shovel compost into your own container or bag, and where you can pick up pre-packaged compost in 20-litre bags. Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis.
