Cooling-off hubs available in Maastricht during the Code Red heatwave alert
Maastricht residents experiencing extreme heat conditions at home are welcome both today and tomorrow at various cooling-off hubs across the city. These cooling-off hubs are intended for people who are unable to find a way to cool down in their own surroundings. The gemeente (municipality) is providing these cooling-off hubs in collaboration with partners because a KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) Code Red heatwave warning is in force both today and tomorrow.
Municipal buildings open
Residents who urgently need to cool down and have nowhere else to go are welcome at these municipal buildings:
- Centre Céramique, Avenue Céramique 50. Open on Friday 09:00-17.00 and on Saturday 10.00-17.00.
- Mosae Forum, Mosae Forum 10. Open on Friday 09:00-17:00 and on Saturday 10:00-17:00 (main entrance on the Maas side of the building).
There will be water, coffee and tea made available to residents. There will be no activities held. First aid is available if required.
Envida facilities open
Elderly residents are welcome to spend a few hours in the communal areas of 6 of Envida’s residential care homes:
- De Mins, Ponjaardruwe 91
- Herculeshof, Herculeshof 20
- Larisa, Polvertorenstraat 20
- Koepelhof, Koepelstraat 84
- De zeven Bronnen, Lovendaalhoeve 30
- Croonenhoff, Veldstraat 18A
Envida is offering elderly residents the opportunity to temporarily escape the heat, have water, coffee or tea and interact. Staff will not be providing any further care to residents here. First aid is available if required.
Community centres open
A number of community centres have air conditioning and will be open for extended hours over the coming days:
- Buurtcentrum Nazareth, Miradorplein 39: open on Friday 13:00-17:00.
- Buurtcentrum Het Ruweel, Malbergsingel 62: open on Friday and Saturday 08:00-20:00.
- Trefcentrum Wittevrouwenveld: open on Saturday 13:00-16:00.
- Amyerhoof, Severenplein 27: open on Friday 11:30-16:00.
There will be no activities taking place at the community centres during these opening hours. However, volunteers or a manager will be on hand to welcome Maastricht residents and offer them water, coffee or tea.
For residents who wish to travel to one of the locations mentioned but do not have their own transport or an ov-chipkaart, Omnibuzz – the Limburg social support transport scheme – will be taking on extra passengers. Residents in need of transport to a cooling-off hub can book a journey through Omnibuzz today and tomorrow by dialling 0900-0699 (bookings must be made at least 1 hour in advance). This applies only to journeys from home to the cooling-off hub mentioned or vice versa. Passengers with an Omnibuzz travel pass are not restricted to any of the locations mentioned above.
