Converting a civil partnership into a marriage

You can convert your civil partnership into a marriage. In order to do so, you must visit the municipality in person and sign the deed of conversion in each other's presence. The conversion deed serves as proof of the marriage. The partnership is converted into a marriage the moment you sign the deed. Each deed of conversion is entered in the register of marriages.

How it works

You must provide the correct documents and make an appointment. You can ask for a ceremony (for example in the wedding hall). Witnesses are not required and you do not have to say yes. However, we will charge you for the conversion. Nothing changes for children born before the conversion. The conversion may have consequences for your assets, in which case you have to consult a notary.

What you'll need

You can send an email to huwelijk [at] maastricht.nl (huwelijk[at]maastricht[dot]nl) to convert your partnership into a marriage. For the conversion you'll need:

  • your valid ID
  • a copy of your civil partnership certificate
  • a birth certificate (only if there has been a name change)

  • Rates 2024

    • A copy or extract of the conversion costs € 16.60
    • A conversion at the counter of the GemeenteLoket costs € 87
    • Marriage rates apply for conversions with a ceremony

  • The partnership is converted into a marriage the moment you sign the deed.
