International student registration

If you are moving to Maastricht from abroad to study at Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, Jan van Eyck Academy or Vista College, you must register with the gemeente (municipality). After registering you will receive a Dutch citizen service number (BSN).

  • Keep an eye on your inbox: we will send you an email with updates about your Dutch citizen service number (BSN) within a few weeks.
  • Please don't call the gemeente to ask about the status of your registration. 
  • Please send your registration request only once: sending it more than once will slow down your registration. 

You must register with the gemeente (municipality) if you are going to live in Maastricht for more than 4 months. If you are from a country outside the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you must apply for a residence permit first.

Registering with the gemeente 

Registering with the gemeente (municipality) works as follows.

  1. Complete the online registration form.
  2. We will send you a confirmation email. Please try again later if you have not received the email – in cases of high traffic your request may not come through immediately. Please turn off Google Translate when completing the form.
  3. Once we have received your registration form, we will send you an email with more information within a few weeks. The email tells you when you can come and collect your Dutch citizen service number (BSN), so keep a close eye on your inbox. Please note: the registration is not completed until you have collected your BSN!
    After receiving the mail, please schedule an appointment to pick it up within 2 months.

We kindly ask you not to call the gemeente to ask about the status of your registration. It may take a few weeks for your registration request to be processed. Sending the request more than once will only slow down your registration.

BSN

You will receive information on how to collect your Dutch citizen service number (BSN) as soon as possible (within a few weeks) once we have received your registration request. Your BSN gives you access to all kinds of government services. Registering with the gemeente is compulsory if you are going to live in the Netherlands for at least 4 months.

Moving home within the Netherlands

You can tell us you are moving home online if you are already registered in another gemeente in the Netherlands and if you are coming to Maastricht to study.
