Wedding celebrant for 1 day

You can have your marriage or registered partnership performed by a wedding officiant you choose yourself. For example, a family member, friend or acquaintance. Or someone who is already a wedding officiant in another municipality. This person will be appointed as an extraordinary registrar for 1 day. This option is only available for the enhanced wedding package.

Would you like to have your marriage or registered partnership performed by a family member, friend or acquaintance? Or someone who is already a wedding officiant in another municipality? Please have them submit a request to take an oath no later than 4 months before the planned wedding date or the date of the civil partnership. They can send the request online with DigiD. We will start the procedure of administering the oath once we have received the request.

Cancelled oath requests: no refunds

Please note: processing an oath request for a marriage in Maastricht costs 423 euro. The costs will be 105 euro if the person has already taken an oath to be a wedding celebrant in another gemeente (municipality). Cancelled oath requests cannot be refunded.

Shortened or extensive procedure

There is a shortened and an extensive procedure to become a wedding celebrant for 1 day. 

Shortened procedure

The shortened procedure is only available to people who have already taken an oath to be a wedding celebrant in another gemeente.

Upon receipt of your request, we will contact your chosen wedding celebrant and start the procedure for taking the oath.

If he or she fulfils all the conditions, the municipality will appoint him or her as a wedding celebrant buitengewoon ambtenaar van de Burgerlijke Stand (babs) of Maastricht. This designation is only valid on the day of the marriage or registered partnership for which the application is made.

Extended procedure

Do you wish to have your marriage or registered partnership celebrated by someone who is not yet a wedding officiant anywhere? Then we will start the extended procedure after receiving your application.

If he or she meets all the requirements, the municipality will appoint him or her as a wedding celebrant buitengewoon ambtenaar van de Burgerlijke Stand (babs) of Maastricht. He or she will then be sworn in by the Limburg District Court in Maastricht. He or she must be present in person for this. The court will make arrangements for this with the wedding officiant of your choice. The appointment and swearing-in is only valid on the day of the marriage or registered partnership for which the application was made.

  • The wedding celebrant for 1 day must...

    • ...be 18 years old or over
    • ...have a certificate of conduct showing no criminal records
    • …take the oath or affirmation at the Limburg court in Maastricht (if the future wedding celebrant for 1 day is not yet a buitengewoon ambtenaar van de burgerlijke stand in another gemeente)
    • ...agree to the code of conduct for civil servants and sign a declaration of integrity
    • ...be able to give a speech.

    Each ceremony is attended by an official Gemeente Maastricht wedding celebrant who initiates the ceremony.

    Processing an oath request for a marriage in Maastricht costs € 437 including the appointment of the wedding official for 1 day. 

    The costs will be € 108 if the person has already taken an oath to be a wedding celebrant in another gemeente (municipality).
